Nancy Pickett Buckfire Law disability scholarship winnerSOUTHFIELD, MI – Nov. 1, 2022 – Buckfire Law is pleased to announce Nancy Pickett, of Seattle, Wash., has been named this year’s recipient of the 2022 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Disability Scholarship.

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. is committed to helping students reach their goals. Realizing the financial roadblock many students face in pursuit of higher education, the family-owned firm established a scholarship award in 2013 committed to helping students with disabilities or injuries in the pursuit of their degree.

Pickett is in her second year of graduate school at the University of Florida, where she is studying public interest communications. She previously earned her bachelor of science, also from University of Florida, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2021.

In high school, Pickett was very active as the captain of her high school volleyball team, volunteering her time at her church and a local children’s cancer foundation. But, after she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, that changed.

“Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that causes digestive dysmotility, issues with your nervous system, and spinal instability. I lose the ability to digest food, so I rely on a feeding tube and central line,” Pickett said. “I stopped playing sports, but continued volunteering my time.”

She started volunteering more of her time with other patients, where she realized many patients diagnosed with serious illnesses weren’t receiving enough support.

Pickett created a teen board at her local children’s hospital which supports age-appropriate life programming for kids, where they can learn to be better advocates for themselves and feel empowered to follow their dreams despite their illness.

“Nancy is an inspiration. It’s not easy to have your life change as a teenager due to an illness, and she’s done so with grace and the willingness to help others in similar circumstances,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, President and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “I couldn’t be prouder to name her our Buckfire Law Disability Scholarship winner this year.”

Every year, Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. awards one student with the $1,000 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Disability Scholarship. The scholarship is available to a student of any age, with any type of disability, including but not limited to physical disabilities, medical conditions, mental or psychiatric conditions, speech and language, learning disabilities, behavioral conditions, and all other conditions.
