Geoffrey Bacon Law School Diversity Scholarship WinnerSOUTHFIELD, MI – Nov. 1, 2022 – Buckfire Law is pleased to announce Geoffrey Bacon, of Fairbanks, Alaska, has been named this year’s recipient of the 2022 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Law School Diversity Scholarship.

This annual award began in 2013 as a way for the Michigan-based law firm to show its commitment to helping law students pursue their educational and career goals.

Bacon is currently enrolled at Berkeley Law. Bacon received his undergraduate degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.

Bacon is part of the federally recognized tribe Native Village of Tanana.

“As a Denaakk’e Athabaskan it is important to stay connected to Alaska Native and American Native communities and issues,” said Bacon. “After law school, I will help other Native students and accomplish my long-term goal of serving my community.”

Bacon worked as a summer associate in Anchorage, at a firm that exclusively represents Tribe and Tribal organizations. He also has assisted California Tribes with writing guidance documents to help protect their culturally significant sites.

Bacon worked at the Alaska Tribal Health System and watched it transform from federally managed to Tribally-owned. Working there allowed him to give a voice to the Native patients and staff, such as helping facilitate a spiritual blessing in a manner appropriate for the Alaska Native Tribes.

“I try to pay forward the support I have received by advising current Native undergraduate students who are considering law school. I want other Native students to be strong applicants and even stronger negotiators,” Bacon said.

Bacon’s long-term goal after graduating law school is to return to Alaska and work for an organization that supports a vibrant future for his Native community. He plans to be a judicial law clerk for the Alaska Supreme Court so he can help judges understand how the laws affect other Native Alaskans.

“Geoff’s desire to help his community is inspiring,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, President and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “We are proud to have Geoff as this year’s recipient and we look forward to seeing what he accomplishes in the future.”
