Eva Romero-Sutherland 2023 Law School Scholarship WinnerSOUTHFIELD, MI – Nov. 1, 2023 – Buckfire Law is pleased to announce Eva Romero-Sutherland, of Los Angeles, Cali., has been named this year’s recipient of the 2023 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Law School Diversity Scholarship.

This annual award began in 2013 as a way for the Michigan-based law firm to show its commitment to helping law students pursue their educational and career goals.

Romero-Sutherland is currently enrolled at UCLA School of Law. She received her undergraduate degree in journalism and government from The University of Texas at Austin, and her Master of Education from the University of Houston.

Romero-Sutherland is a first-generation Mexican-American law student and former public school educator. “I have experienced firsthand the need for increased ethnic diversity in the legal profession,” she said.  “While I was a teacher, I worked in primarily low-income communities with predominantly Latinx and Black students. I saw the inequities my students faced, and it was all too familiar with the obstacles they could have to overcome to pursue higher education.”

Romero-Sutherland is in the top 10% of her class at UCLA and is an active member of the Latinx Law Student Association.

While at her first legal internship, Romero-Sutherland found herself to be a minority in multiple ways. She was significantly older than other summer associates, non-white, and had no other lawyers in the family.

Through UCLA’s SEO Law Fellowship, she has been able to connect with other diverse law students who are in similar positions to her, and has begun mentoring other law school applicants of color. She plans to use her experience to mentor diverse first-year students. She firmly believes in paying it forward by mentoring other students. She credits her countless mentors for helping her throughout her education.

Romero-Sutherland plans to use her position as a future alumna of UCLA and attorney to continue to help recruit and mentor ethnically diverse law school candidates and help support them as they make their way through school and into professional employment

“Eva’s desire to help other students is impressive,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, President and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “We are proud to have Eva as this year’s recipient and we look forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the future.”

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. awards one student each year with the $2,000 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Law School Diversity Scholarship. The scholarship is available to a student attending law school who is also a member of an ethnic, racial, or other minority, or someone who demonstrates a commitment to issues of diversity within their community.

Buckfire Law offers four separate academic scholarships annually for students wanting to continue their education. For more information on the scholarship program, visit our page, buckfirelaw.com/scholarships/law.
