The product liability and personal injury attorneys at Buckfire Law represent individuals and families harmed by addictive social media platforms. Across the United States, lawsuits allege that platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive—especially for children and teenagers—contributing to a significant youth mental health crisis.

In a landmark March 2026 bellwether trial, a jury found major tech companies negligent in their platform design, awarding $6 million to a plaintiff who suffered severe mental health harm. This verdict has set a critical framework for the thousands of cases currently pending in multidistrict litigation (MDL 3047).

A New Mexico jury found Meta liable for failing to safeguard users of its apps (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp) from child predators. The jury decided that Meta should pay $375 million in that case. In addition, more than 40 state attorneys general have filed lawsuits against Meta, claiming it is contributing to the mental health crisis among young people by designing Instagram and Facebook features that are addictive.

How Social Media Platforms Are Allegedly Addictive

Lawsuits claim that companies use “recommendation AI” and specific features to keep users engaged for long periods. According to research from Yale Medicine, excessive use can alter brain connectivity and executive function, particularly in skills like impulse control and attention.

Commonly cited addictive design features include:

  • Infinite Scrolling: Eliminates natural stopping points to exploit impulsivity.
  • Variable Reward Notifications: Mimics slot machine mechanics to create dopamine-driven feedback loops.
  • Algorithmic Personalization: Intensifies use by serving highly targeted, emotionally charged content.
  • Short-Form Loops: Features like TikTok and Reels that exploit developing adolescent attention spans.

Reported Harms Linked to Social Media Addiction

A 2025 systematic review published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirms that frequent and problematic social media use correlates with several serious health indicators:

  • Severe Anxiety and Depression: Compounded by social comparison and high-stakes digital environments.
  • Body Dysmorphia & Eating Disorders: Often triggered by beauty filters and idealized content.
  • Sleep Disruption: Late-night scrolling is closely linked to mood disorders and reduced academic performance.
  • Self-Harm and Suicidality: Vulnerable users may be exposed to harmful content through algorithmic “rabbit holes.”

Social Media Statistics

According to PewResearch.org, about seven out of 10 people report using social media platforms. Half of all 13-17-year-olds say they use Instagram at least once a day.

70% of 13-17-year-olds use YouTube at least once a day, and it is the most popular platform, with 90% of teens saying they use it in some capacity.

About half of teens (48%) say that social media harms people their age. Far fewer teens say social media has a negative impact on themselves as on their peers (14% to 48%)

Legal Theories Behind the Social Media Addiction Claims

Following the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2024 call for warning labels on social media, legal claims focus on:

  • Defective Design: Arguing that platforms are products with inherent design flaws that cause harm.
  • Failure to Warn: Claims that companies ignored internal research showing their products were harmful to minors.
  • Negligence: A failure to implement reasonable safety measures, such as effective age verification.

Do I Qualify to File a Lawsuit?

You may be eligible to pursue a claim if:

  1. The User was a Minor: Most successful claims involve users who began using platforms before age 18.
  2. Documented Medical Harm: A formal diagnosis of an eating disorder, clinical depression, or self-harm behavior.
  3. Treatment History: Evidence of therapy, hospitalization, or psychiatric care related to social media use.
