SOUTHFIELD, MI – Nov. 1, 2022 – Buckfire Law is pleased to announce Rebecca Phillips, of Santa Barbara, California, has been named this year’s recipient of the 2022 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Paralegal Scholarship.
This annual award began in 2018 as a way for the Michigan-based law firm to show its commitment to helping paralegal students pursue their certification and ultimate career goals.
Phillips is currently enrolled in the Professional and Continuing Education Paralegal Studies Program at UC Santa Barbara.
Phillips previously earned her undergraduate degree from UCLA before being faced with a major life crisis that left her homeless. She says that rather than accept her homelessness, she leveraged her education to rebuild her life and currently works as an executive assistant.
“I have worked really hard to rebuild my dignity and my life, and I’m determined to prove myself and succeed in the field of law,” Phillips said. “My passion for law ignited during a criminal justice class. I knew I found a career path that utilized my natural talents while challenging me to grow professionally.”
Phillips hopes her story helps others understand that many tough situations can be overcome. She wrote that it takes patience and perseverance, but you will become stronger, more compassionate individuals for working through their most difficult days.
In the future, she hopes to work as a corporate paralegal, where she would find it rewarding to work with an attorney to help clients in need.
“We’re proud of Rebecca for persevering and pushing through an incredibly tough time in her life,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, President and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “She’s proof that you can follow your passion at any age. We’re so pleased to name her the Buckfire Law Paralegal Scholarship winner this year.”
Every year, Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. awards one student with the $1,000 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Paralegal Scholarship. The scholarship is available to students enrolled in a paralegal program within the United States. The firm offers four separate academic scholarships annually for students wanting to continue their education.
