Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite (Cyclospora cayetanensis) that causes an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis. People become infected after consuming contaminated food or water.

Unlike many foodborne illnesses, Cyclospora is not spread directly from person to person. Instead, outbreaks are most often associated with contaminated fresh produce, particularly leafy greens, herbs, berries, and similar foods. Cyclospora symptoms typically begin 2 to 14 days after exposure.

Common symptoms include:

• Severe or explosive diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Significant weight loss
• Severe stomach cramps
• Bloating
• Nausea and vomiting
• Extreme fatigue
• Low-grade fever

The Taco Bell & Taylor Farms Outbreak Investigation

Federal and state health officials, including the FDA, the CDC, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), have linked a major multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to Taco Bell restaurants.

According to the FDA and CDC, the outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce at Taco Bell restaurants in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. More than 1,600 confirmed illnesses associated with Taco Bell exposure have been identified.

Michigan has experienced the largest number of reported illnesses during the outbreak. The MDHHS reports that cases increased rapidly beginning in late June 2026, with thousands of reported illnesses across the state.

Early investigations pointed to lettuce and salad greens as common exposures among many patients before federal investigators linked illnesses to Taco Bell restaurants. MDHHS continues to work alongside the CDC, FDA, and local health departments as additional cases are reported.
