About the Boar’s Head Listeria Recall
Boar’s Head has expanded its July 2024 recall of deli meat products that may be contaminated with Listeria. Approximately 7 million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products have been recalled to date. There have been 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024 under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names that have been recalled. These include meat intended for slicing at retail delis and well as packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations. These products have sell-by dates ranging from July 29, 2024, and October 17, 2024.
States With Confirmed Listeria Cases
As of August 27, 2024, a total of 57 people have been confirmed to have Listeria
New York has seen the most people infected with Listeria due to the outbreak. More illnesses and deaths have been reported, with the likelihood that more will be reported because Listeria can remain on surfaces, like meat slicers, even at refrigerated temperatures.
Listeria cases have been reported in the following states according to the CDC:
- Arizona
- Florida
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- North Carolina
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Virginia
- Wisconsin
The CDC believes the true number of those sick due to this outbreak is higher than the current number reported because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for Listeria, and some more recent illnesses have yet to be reported. It can take 3-4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of the outbreak.
What is Listeria?
Listeria is a foodborne bacterium that can be very serious for pregnant women, people older than 65, and those with weakened immune systems. It’s most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products.
According to the Mayo Clinic, healthy people rarely become ill from Listeria, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems, which includes those who are:
- Pregnant
- Older than 65
- Have AIDS
- Have diabetes or kidney disease
- Receiving chemotherapy
- Taking certain rheumatoid arthritis drugs
- Taking medications to block rejection of a transplanted organ
Listeria can survive and even multiply in low temperatures, like refrigerators and freezers. Unlike spoiled food, Listeria does not cause contaminated food to smell or change the taste or texture.
What are the symptoms of Listeria?
Symptoms may begin a few days after you’ve eaten the contaminated food, but it can take 30 days or more before the first signs and symptoms of infection begin. Symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Upset stomach
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
A severe Listeria infection may spread to your bloodstream or brain, causing sepsis, meningitis, or encephalitis. In severe cases, it can lead to death.
During pregnancy, Listeria is likely to only cause mild symptoms in the mother, however, the risks to the baby can be life-threatening. The baby can die in the womb or have a life-threatening infection within days of being born. Signs of a Listeria infection in a newborn can be subtle but include:
- Little interest in feeding
- Irritability
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Difficulty breathing
What Complications Does Listeria Cause?
In pregnant women, consequences for babies can include miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, potentially fatal infection after birth
In some cases, a Listeria infection can lead to life-threatening complications such as septicemia, endocarditis or meningitis.
Listeria can also lead to death, especially in high-risk groups such as elderly newborns, and those with weakened immune systems.
The CDC estimates that 1,600 people are infected with Listeria and 260 people die from the infection each year in the United States.
