What is Xeljanz and how does it work?

Xeljanz is a prescription drug manufactured by Pfizer that was first approved by the FDA in 2012. It is an anti-inflammatory drug known as a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor which helps disrupt JAK pathways from inside the cells.

Xeljanz is not available as a generic medication and is effective in treating those with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. In 2019 alone, Pfizer spent $257 million dollars marketing the drug.

When the FDA first approved Xeljanz Pfizer was required to conduct a clinical safety trial on patients with rheumatoid arthritis. There were over 4,000 subjects included in the study, all over 50-years-old, who had at least one cardiovascular risk factor.

While Xeljanz has been on the market since 2012, there was no warning label on any cardiovascular side effects until 2019 when the FDA released a safety announcement regarding the increase of blood clots in the lungs.

Xeljanz Side Effects

  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Blood clots
  • Colon cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Melanoma

Additional side effects may include:

  • Fever, sweating, or chills

  • Blood in phlegm
  • Urinating more often than normal
  • Muscle aches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhea or stomach pain
  • Feeling very tired
  • Allergic reactions

Does Xeljanz Cause Cancer?

In February 2019, results of the first Xeljanz safety trial showed that there was an increase in the risk of blot clotting events such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

The study examined patients with rheumatoid arthritis who had at least one cardiovascular risk, such as high blood pressure.

In February 2021, the FDA issued a new safety warning that the latest results from the clinical trial showed an increased risk of serious heart-related events and cancer in patients who took Xeljanz.

The most common cardiovascular event associated with Xeljanz is a heart attack, while the most common cancer is lung cancer, though other cancers identified in the study include breast cancer, melanoma, and pancreatic cancer. Patients taking higher doses of the drug are at an increased risk for cancers.

Has Xeljanz been Recalled?

Currently, Xeljanz has not been recalled, but the FDA has issued a safety alert. The FDA says a postmarket study has linked Xeljanz to an increased risk of serious heart-related problems and cancer.

The FDA’s alert came days after Pfizer released the data from the trial. Pfizer first warned patients about the potential for heart-related issues in 2019. If you or someone you care about are currently taking Xeljanz, contact your doctor to discuss your options.

Pfizer is an American pharmaceutical and biotechnology company established in 1849 in New York. Some major products they have developed include Prevnar, a pneumonia vaccine, Zoloft, Lipitor, and a Covid-19 vaccine.

How Much are Xeljanz Settlements?

The litigation against the pharmaceutical company is so new there are no settlements yet. For most drug manufacturer lawsuits, the cases can take several years before there are any compensation payout amount determinations.

When it gets to that stage of litigation, there is a specific claim submission process. Every Xeljanz lawsuit claimant will submit a claim detailing their injuries and side effects. The claimants with more serious injuries will receive higher settlements.
