SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Oct. 20, 2025 – Buckfire Law is pleased to announce Lisa Huang, of Voorhees, New Jersey, has been named this year’s recipient of the 2025 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Medical School Diversity Scholarship.
This annual award began in 2014 as a way for the Michigan-based law firm to show its commitment to helping medical students pursue their educational and career goals.
Huang is currently a third-year medical student at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. She previously received undergraduate degrees in both biology and economics from Case Western Reserve University.
Huang is a first-generation college student and the first in her family to pursue medicine. After immigrating to Philadelphia with her family at the age of ten, Huang witnessed how patients can feel excluded and overlooked from their own medical care.
She is committed to creating medical spaces where people of all backgrounds feel welcome, so patients can understand and take ownership of their medical care. “I felt the isolation that comes when medicine leaves people out: when culture, language, or cost create barriers no one else in the room seems to notice,” said Huang. She believes that small gestures, like a greeting or using a patient’s native language, can build trust and lead to better patient care.
Huang is passionate about serving her community and addressing the challenges faced by marginalized groups. She co-founded the Skincare Access Project, a skincare pop-up program in partnership with her school’s free health clinic and local pharmacy, serving a largely Spanish-speaking immigrant community. The program provides donated skincare products and bilingual educational pamphlets on sun safety and skincare basics. Huang also recruited bilingual students so community members could ask questions in their own language.
Huang also volunteers with Kensington Community Outreach, distributing food, clothing, and hygiene supplies to those facing unstable housing in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood.
Huang plans to continue her path in dermatology, while continuing to advocate for and expand community access to skin health education after she earns her degree.
“Along the way, I learned to turn barriers into opportunities to build belonging,” said Huang. “Now I strive to lay down that blueprint for others, creating spaces in medicine where people of all backgrounds feel they belong.”
“Lisa’s empathy and deep commitment to understanding patients’ needs truly stand out,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, President and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “It was inspiring to hear how Lisa goes above and beyond to ensure others in the community feel included and valued. We’re so pleased to name her the Buckfire Law Medical School Diversity Scholarship winner this year.”
Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. awards one student each year with the $2,000 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Medical School Diversity Scholarship.
