Coral Caceres 2024 Medical School Scholarship WinnerSOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Nov. 1, 2024 – Buckfire Law is pleased to announce Coral Caceres, of Bogota, New Jersey, has been named this year’s recipient of the 2024 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Medical School Diversity Scholarship.

This annual award began in 2014 as a way for the Michigan-based law firm to show its commitment to helping medical students pursue their educational and career goals.

Caceres is currently a third-year medical student at Drexel University College of Medicine, where she also earned a Master of Science through the Drexel Pathway to Medical School (DPMS) program. She previously received her undergraduate degree in biology from Rutgers University-Newark.

Caceres is a first-generation Latina in the medical field and grew up in the Dominican Republic. She worked as an Executive Teaching Assistant in the DPMS program, was co-president of the Latino Medical Student Association, and was one of the diversity ambassadors on the admissions committee at the Drexel University College of Medicine.

She is an advocate of diverse representation in healthcare who provides empathetic care to communities facing barriers. “My journey has been marked by a commitment to addressing disparities and ensuring that diverse voices are heard in medical education and practice,” said Caceres. She believes that diverse outlooks lead to more understanding and comprehensive patient care.

She is passionate about future physicians being culturally sensitive and recognizing the obstacles faced by marginalized communities. “As I continue my medical education and eventual practice, I remain committed to advocating for those whose voices often go unheard, striving to create a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system for all,” Caceres said.

Caceres plans to earn her medical degree and specialize in sexual and reproductive health, working in family medicine or as an OB/GYN. Her goal is to empower and educate underserved populations to make knowledgeable decisions about their health, specifically the Latinx community.

Caceres aspires to mentor and guide other minority students who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, however often feel discouraged due to a lack of diversity in the medical field. She is devoted to helping grow the 6% of Latinx physicians in the United States.

“Coral’s compassion and care for underserved communities is inspiring,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, President and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “She’s going to empower others in the community with knowledge and confidence. We couldn’t be more proud to name her this year’s winner of the Buckfire Law Medical School Diversity Scholarship.”
