Why was the Fisher-Price Rock n Play Sleeper Recalled?

The Fisher-Price company issued a recall of its Rock n Play Sleepers on April 12, 2019. A total of 4.7 million baby sleepers manufactured in China were recalled due to health hazards. Consumers were warned to immediately stop using the product.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted that “Infant fatalities have occurred in Rock n Play Sleepers after the infants rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained or under other circumstances.”

The CPSC website states that since introduced in 2009, over 30 infants have died in Rock n Play Sleepers. Other investigations have reported over 90 infant deaths. The implication is that the defectively designed sleeper was a primary cause of the death of these babies.

How do Rock n Play Sleepers Cause Injuries to Babies?

The baby sleepers position infants at a 30-degree incline. This incline is dangerous as it significantly increases the risk that the infant’s head will slip into a life-threatening position. The unsafe angle can constrict the baby’s windpipe by slumping their heads forward onto their chests making it very hard for the baby to breathe. This can cause death by suffocation or asphyxiation.

In addition, the sleeper angle can cause infants to roll over or change positions resulting in pushing their faces against the padding. Again, this can cause the baby to suffocate. Other injuries are caused when an active baby tips the sleeper over and gets trapped underneath it.

Most parents assumed the product was safe and felt confident that their child would sleep comfortably in the sleeper. They had no reason to suspect a child would be injured by a product made and sold by the Fisher-Price Company at major retail stores.

Types of Injuries Caused by Rock n Play Sleepers

Defective baby sleepers can cause a number of serious injuries, including suffocation, neck injuries, and harm caused by restrictive breathing. This can result in permanent harm, like a brain injury, and even death. And, most parents have no idea their child is being harmed when they put their baby to sleep.

Unfortunately, many parents who lost a child did not even know or suspect the death was caused by the baby sleeper. Many times, even medical examiners and doctors determined that the child dies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID). As a result, no action was taken against Fisher-Price for the devastating loss of their baby.

Fisher-Price Infant to Toddler and Newborn to Toddler Rockers Recall

In June 2022, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning regarding Fisher-Price Infant-to-Toddler Rockers and Newborn-to-Toddler Rockers due to 13 reported deaths between 2009-2021.

Since the 1990s, over 17 million Rockers have been sold worldwide. The Rockers are similar to Rock n Play Sleepers, but not the same product. These Rockers come with reclining seats, which are designed to swing back and forth to soothe a child, however, they are not meant for use during sleep.
