What is GERD?

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease is where stomach acid flows frequently into the esophagus which connects your mouth to your stomach. The acid can irritate the esophagus lining. Most people can manage GERD with over-the-counter medication, but some people need stronger medications or surgery to ease their symptoms.

Common GERD symptoms are:

  • Heartburn
  • Chest pain
  • Sensation of a lump in your throat
  • Regurgitation of food
  • Difficulty swallowing

Over time, the chronic inflammation of your esophagus can cause damage or scar tissue in the lower esophagus, causing the food pathway to narrow. Additionally, stomach acids can wear away tissue, causing an esophageal ulcer to develop.

About LINX Reflux Management Systems

LINX Reflux Management Systems are a series of titanium beads with magnetic cores that connect together in a ring shape. The device is surgically implanted around the lower end of the esophagus and used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients who have not found success with medical therapy.

The device helps to strengthen the muscle and helps prevent the flow of stomach contents into the esophagus.

LINX was FDA-approved in 2012 through a premarket approval process, which means the device was approved for commercial distribution, for patients diagnosed with GERD. The FDA required an additional five-year study on the longevity, safety, and efficacy of the device.

What Caused the LINX Recall?

The LINX device was first recalled in 2018 due to the numerous reports of the device separating inside the body.

Patients may have also suffered from scar tissue around the lower esophageal sphincter. In some cases the scar tissue may be around the LINX device, causing the need for dissection to free the device.

LINX Reflux Management Complications

The most common side effects associated with the LINX system are:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Post-operative pain in the stomach
  • Bloating
  • Recurrence of heartburn or regurgitation

The serious side effects associated with LINX are:

  • Migration of device into esophagus
  • Device is too tight, causing food to get stuck

Establishing Liability for Defective Medical Devices

When patients agree to have their surgeons implant medical devices in their bodies to treat their GERD, they assume the device is safe. However, even with the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the LINX device can still be hazardous to consumers. In many cases, thousands of patients must suffer injuries before the device manufacturer, or the government removes the device from the market.

Some companies can fast-track new medical devices through the FDA approval process because they are similar to products already approved by the agency. As a result, patients become unwitting recipients of never previously tested on humans. This fast-track process leads to defective medical devices that cause injuries to patients.
