Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. is pleased to announce Ms. Adriana Lopez as the recipient of the law firm’s 2015 Medical School Diversity Scholarship! She will receive $2,000.00 toward her medical school education. Ms. Lopez was selected from a large group of deserving applicants from throughout the United States. Adriana has completed one year of medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.
Adriana, who is of Hispanic heritage, has dedicated a significant portion of her free time to helping traditionally underprivileged school children gain an interest in health care. She has done this through the Youth Medical Program at Columbia University. Additionally, Adriana works closely with an outreach program known as Young Docs. This program is sponsored and supported by the Black and Latino Student Association at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Inspired by the Youth Medical Program, Young Docs aims to spend time with young grade school students in order to show them the importance of the medical field.
“By cultivating relationships with teens that have been historically underrepresented in medicine, we aim to inspire and build confidence in those considering a career in healthcare; with the ultimate goal of increasing diversity in medicine,” says Adriana.
“As a participant of the Young Docs Program, I recently visited 1st graders at a local school in Harlem where I spent the afternoon teaching kids about the human skeleton. This experience was incredibly rewarding and I will continue to encourage kids in the community to pursue higher education in medicine.”
Students who applied for the Medical School Diversity Scholarship must be a member of an ethnic or racial minority, or have been an individual who demonstrates a commitment to issues of diversity during their medical school education. Applicants must be currently attending an accredited medical school within the United States and possess academic achievement as reflected by a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants submitted an essay describing how they are actively engaged in the promotion of ethnic diversity, or how they plan to use their medical education to do so.
