A Michigan sexual assault lawsuit will be filed against the University of Michigan for the conduct of former professor Bruce Conforth. Several news reports were published after a virtual press conference announcing the lawsuit.
Eight victims, all U-M alumni, will be plaintiffs in the lawsuit and there may be other victims out there who have not yet come forward.
The victims described the conduct of Bruce Conforth and it appears consistent among them. They allege Conforth socialized with students, including drinking at a bar, and then inappropriately touched them.
The suit alleges he even demanded sexual favors and used his position and influence to put students higher up on the class waiting list so they could be in his classes.
In addition, the sex assault lawsuit alleges that Conforth corresponded with at least one victim by e-mail that threatened her if she did not have sex with him.
Other e-mails were sent as well intimidating the victims and making additional the threats. Several victims reported this to the school and filed Title IX reports, but apparently no real action was taken after receiving these reports.
This lawsuit is on the heels of both the Dr. Robert Anderson lawsuit settlement and the termination of University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate. The University has not yet responded to the allegations.
