Haidang NguyenSOUTHFIELD, MI – June 6, 2017 — Buckfire Law is pleased to announce that Haidang Nguyen, of San Diego, has been named this year’s recipient of the 2017 Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Medical School Diversity Scholarship.

The Medical School Diversity Scholarship, established in 2013, is part of the law firm’s initiative to recognize medical school students who do outstanding work to promote ethnic diversity in their community.

Nguyen, who just completed his second year of medical school at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, intends to pursue a career as a pediatrician.

“I’m keeping my options open, but I really enjoy working with pediatric patients,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen is the son of Vietnamese immigrants, and said his mother was in her first trimester of pregnancy when she immigrated. Nguyen grew up in a crime-riddled immigrant community, a background which he believes allows him to connect and empathize with his patients better.

He’s also working this summer for an underserved program in Flint with Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, known for her work on the Flint lead poisoning crisis.

“It wasn’t an easy journey,” Nguyen said of his path to medical school.

Nguyen has also studied abroad in Brazil, where he worked with the LGBT community on an HIV/AIDS prevention research project in low-income “favela” communities. He also did similar work in South Africa in 2016.

“Haidang has accomplished an incredible amount,” said Lawrence J. Buckfire, Managing Partner and Lead Trial Attorney at Buckfire Law. “We are so pleased to be able to provide financial assistance to deserving candidates like Haidang.”

Every year, the Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Medical Diversity Scholarship awards one qualified and deserving student $2,000 to be used toward his or her continued education in medical school. The scholarship is available to all medical school students in the United States who work hard to promote ethnic diversity in their communities.

Since 1969, Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. has represented victims of injuries and medical malpractice. The firm offers multiple scholarships each year to assist students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence.
