5 Steps & Tips to Avoid Drinking and Driving on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve brings family and friends both near and far together to celebrate new beginnings and resolutions. For those of us who may be kicking off the new year with champagne or other alcoholic beverages, here are a few steps and tips you can use to avoid drinking and driving.

1) Use a designated driver.
Going out with a group? Having a friend or relative as a sober designated driver will help ensure you, your loved ones, and others on the road arrive home safely.

2) Use ride services such as Uber or Lyft.
Don’t have a designated driver? These well-known taxi alternative ride services are available with a simple download from your app store. Bonus tip: ride with friends and split the bill! With services/apps like Venmo, you can avoid getting stiffed by the friend who doesn’t carry cash and forgets to pay you back! This app allows friends to send you money electronically safely and right from their bank account.

3) Use public transit.
Public transportation in many cities is a short walk away. The services will not only get you to your destination safely, but you’ll help save the environment by riding with others!

4) Host a party at your home!
You luckily won’t have anywhere to travel but the few feet to your comfy bed. Make sure your loved ones are safe by asking them to check their keys at the door. This will give them an added level of accountability, making sure they don’t make the poor decision to drive home while intoxicated.

5) Call a sober friend or relative to pick you up.
Don’t be ashamed to call a sober friend or relative who might not be expecting your call. They’ll be glad you made the decision to call them rather than risking your life or the lives of others by drinking and driving.
